JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Knives Out

In our modern, fast-moving society you don’t have time to waste on dissertation-length movie reviews. That’s why film critic Jason Evans is here to let you know what you are getting at the cinema in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100 Word Review of Knives Out.

The Premise: Writer/Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) turns his attention to the murder-mystery genre in this homage to Agatha Christie films. The movie centers on the mysterious death of wealthy author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is called in to investigate. The suspects include virtually everyone in the Thrombey family (Jamie Lee Curtis. Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Toni Collette among others) as well as Harlan’s nurse Marta (Ana de Armas). But, this is one of those stories where even when you think you know whodunit, there is still plenty to unravel.

The 100 Words: This mixture of mystery and humor is one of the most enjoyable films of the year. Johnson’s script crackles with great lines and engaging characters while constantly keeping you guessing at what will come next. Every member of the stellar cast is on their A-game. There can be no doubt that Johnson is an “actor’s director” as Evans, de Armas, and Craig are positively magnetic here. There isn’t a single negative thing I can say about this movie that is a strong contender for Best Picture. Do your best to see it unspoiled so it’s mysteries can wash over you.
