JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Downhill

If you don’t have much time but want to know what to see at the movies, here is the latest #100WordReview by film critic Jason Evans. This time, he gives us 100 words on Downhill.

The Premise: Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Pete (Will Ferrell) are a happily married couple who take their two children on a ski vacation to the Swiss Alps. When the family is caught in an avalanche that looks terrifying (but isn’t actually very dangerous) Pete runs away, leaving his loved ones behind. Even though no one is actually hurt, Billie starts to question how she can spend her life with the man who ran off in the face of danger.

The 100 Words: What happens when you put two of the best comedy actors around in a film that really feels more like a drama? You get something uneven and unsure of itself. The best parts of Downhill are the moments of comedy, especially from Louis-Dreyfus, but the script just doesn’t make any of these characters likable enough for us enjoy spending time with them or become invested in their struggle. Mercifully, Downhill clocks in at just 86 minutes, so at least it doesn’t feel interminably long. Still, this is a tough one to sit through and these amazing leads deserve better material.
