JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Another Round

Powerful performances but what was the message?

Film Critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100 word review of Another Round.

The Premise: Danish-language “Another Round” stars Mads Mikkelsen (Dr. Strange, Rogue One, Casino Royale) as a schoolteacher suffering through a midlife crisis. He and three teacher friends decide to test the notion that having a little bit of alcohol all the time, even while teaching, will make them more relaxed and engaging. When, “a little bit” works like a charm, they decide to test what more and more alcohol will do to their lives.

The 100 Words: Anchored by Mikkelsen’s brilliant performance, “Another Round” is touching, intimate, tragic, and human with several very funny moments. This will likely be a strong Best Foreign Language Oscar contender. But, the film is slow at the start and I found the message a bit muddled. It never reaches a clear conclusion on whether alcohol, at least in small doses, is a good or bad influence. The story is also less accessible for English-speakers as I am sure some subtlety is lost as we read the subtitles. Still, watching Mads Mikkelsen at his finest is worth it. Check this one out.
