JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Spencer

A painful dive into a troubled life

Film Critic Jason Evans is on a mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes for the Queen to change her hat. Jason’s reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). This is his 100 word review of Spencer.

The Premise – Set over a long Christmas weekend at one of the British Royal Family’s castles, Spencer takes us inside the mind of Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) as her marriage to Prince Charles crumbles. The film imagines what it must have been like for the deeply troubled young princess to endure a weekend with her disapproving husband and in-laws. The film is directed by Pablo Larrain, who drew acclaim for directing Jackie, the biography of Jacqueline Kennedy.

The 100 Words – Though a quality production with some gorgeous sets and costumes, this film was borderline unwatchable. Stewart gives her all to the role, but Diana is portrayed like a twitchy drug addict suffering from delusions and self-destructive behavior. They took one of the most beloved women in history and made her utterly unlikeable other than a few fleeting moments of motherly love with William and Harry. The movie includes several montages and sequences with no dialogue that do nothing to advance the plot. There’s barely any story aside from, “this woman is troubled.” Spencer may be artistic, but it’s not entertaining.
