JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Superman

This is what superhero movies should be

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you about movies in less time than it takes to punch out a kaiju. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 doesn’t tell you enough and 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of James Gunn’s Superman.

The Premise: The movie begins with Superman (David Corenswet) in a difficult spot, he just lost his first fight ever and he is in trouble with the U.S. government for meddling in foreign affairs. What Superman does not know is that Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is engineering a series of events to make Superman less and less popular. Meanwhile, Superman’s relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) is struggling because she thinks he may be acting rashly (and, let’s face it, she has commitment issues). With the public and the government turning on him, can Superman figure out what Lex is up to before his arch enemy succeeds at his ultimate plan, to kill Superman? The film is written and directed by James Gunn, who made the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel Studios. It also stars Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.

The 100-words: With plenty of humor (Superdog Krypto steals the movie) and engaging action scenes, this is the best comic book movie in years. Corenswet brings humanity and emotion to Superman and his relationship with Lois is complex and believable. Hoult’s Luthor is over the top, maybe dial back the mania a little bit. Mr. Terrific is a standout among the supporting players. There are moments where it gets overly silly and I wasn’t a fan of the “pocket universe” subplot, but Gunn has given us a Superman we can love and admire. I can’t wait to see what DC does next.
