JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Freakier Friday

 Cute but not very consequential

Film critic Jason Evans is on a mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to hug your grandma. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short while 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Freakier Friday.

The Premise: About 20 years after the original body-swapping film, we find Anna (Lindsay Lohan) at a major crossroads in her life. She is all set to marry her boyfriend, Eric, (Manny Jacinto from “The Good Place”) but Anna and Eric’s daughters don’t get along at all and Anna’s ever-present and overbearing mother, Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), isn’t making things any easier. At a big engagement party, Anna and Tess again find themselves switching bodies… but not with each other. This time they have been magically put in the bodies of the teenaged girls and vice-versa. Can the 4 women figure out how to switch back before Anna and Eric’s wedding turns into a total disaster?

The 100-words: Some nice humorous ideas and genuine emotional moments elevate what could have been a tired retread. Curtis absolutely shines early in the film when playing a teenager suddenly in the body of a grandma. The many “my body is old!” jokes all land. The blended family storyline feels modern and gives a little more relevance to the ideas at play here. Sadly, the humor goes too broad and silly at times and I thought several of Lohan’s comedy bits just didn’t work. Still, it is not a bad film and fans of the original will probably find something to like.
