Anne Hathaway Set to Play Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy is Bane

Rumors regarding the villains in The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, have been rampant over the last few months, but it looks like we can finally put them to rest. Deadline broke the news today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) and the previously-announced Tom Hardy (one of the coolest things about Inception) will be playing Bane, the musclebound baddie who broke Batman's back in the comics.

Hathaway as Catwoman seems like perfect casting to me, though I might be putting the cart before the horse. Warner Bros.' press release mentions Kyle, not Catwoman. Since this is Nolan's (and most likely Christian Bale's) last Bat-flick, I can't imagine he's introducing Kyle in one movie and making her Catwoman later on. So will she be the masked femme fatale from the beginning, or are we looking at a Two Face-like cameo in the film's final minutes? All I know is Hathaway + skin-tight leather catsuit = too good to waste on just a couple of scenes.

Hardy playing Bane comes as more of a surprise. The character is a fairly new addition to the Batman mythos, and Nolan has typically pulled from the all-star list (The Scarecrow, The Joker, Ra's al Ghul). Kind of makes sense, though. The Penguin isn't very realistic and The Riddler would seem like too much of a retread after The Dark Knight. Besides, who the heck wants to follow Heath Ledger?

We'll see if Nolan makes it three-for-three when The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 12, 2012.
