Time is a precious commodity and film critic
Jason Evans does not want you to waste it. That is why he attempts to tell you
all you need to know about films in just 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is
his 100-word review of A Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood.
The Premise: Don’t go into this film thinking it
is a biography of Mr. Rogers (Tom Hanks). This is the story of troubled
magazine writer Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), who gets assigned to do a short
puff piece on Fred Rogers. Vogel is skeptical that the seemingly perfect Rogers
is who he appears to be, but is soon convinced as the TV icon tries to help
Lloyd turn his life around.
The 100 Words: Most movies try to make you laugh
or cry or quicken your heartbeat. Rare is the film that tries to make you a
better person, but that is the mission of Beautiful Day. Hanks is perfect as
Mr. Rogers, with great moments of humor as well as profound moments of insight.
The movie drags a bit whenever he is off screen and the film takes some surreal
turns that will challenge viewers. But if you stick with it your reward is a
warm feeling in your heart. Don’t miss one of the best performances and best
films of the year.
