Fresh off the success of his
Aladdin remake, Guy Ritchie is back in theaters with The Gentlemen starring Matthew
McConaughey, Charlie
Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle
Dockery, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant.
Here is film critic Jason Evans with his quick and easy 100-word review.
The Premise: Writer/Director
Ritchie gets back to his British gangster roots (he first grew to fame directing
Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) with The Gentlemen. It is the
story of a super successful marijuana dealer (McConaughey) who wants to sell
his business, the violent Chinese gangster (Golding) who wants to buy it, and
the private investigator (Grant) who knows all the details and wants to be paid
to keep quiet.
The 100 Words: Though The Gentlemen is a bit of a slog early on, it rises
to the occasion in the back half and does a nice job of keeping the audience
laughing and guessing at the same time (just don’t think too hard about how many twists there are). The all-star cast is in strong form, especially Hugh
Grant chews up his heavily accented lines with delight. This is more tame and
less interesting than Ritchie’s Lock Stock or Snatch, but is still a good time
at the movies. If you like British gangster movies, this could be your cup of
tea.
