JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Birds of Prey

The Premise: When Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) breaks up with her boyfriend, the Joker (never seen on screen), she loses her protection and ability to have free run of Gotham City. Local crime lord Roman Sionis (Ewan McGreggor) sees this as the perfect time to take revenge for his many grievances against Harley. Roman is also trying to find a diamond which will allow him to buy an army and rule the city's underworld. Harley figures out the only way to stop Roman is to team up with vigilantes The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) as well as local cop Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).

The 100 Words: As you could tell from the premise, there's a lot of character setup and backstory to tell here. The film often gets bogged down in exposition. But, when it just cuts loose and lets its female heroes battle it out with the bad guys, the movie soars. DC wants Birds of Prey to be their Deadpool, but the humor and quips never quite get there. Robbie, Winstead, and McGreggor are really good and there's more than enough here for us to get a sequel. With the characters defined, hopefully they will be able to tell a better story next time.
