JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Da 5 Bloods

A bit long, but a wonderful story from an essential director

Film critic Jason Evans is committed to giving you all you need to know about movies in just a few words. How few? 100 words... exactly. Here is his 100-word review of Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods.

The Premise: The latest film from the always provocative director Spike Lee features 4 Vietnam veterans (Delroy Lindo, Clark Peters, Norm Lewis, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.) who reunite 40 years after the war to search for the remains of their slain commander, Stormin' Norman (Chadwick Bozeman). Oh, and they are also looking for a treasure they buried many years ago and never recovered. As they hike through the jungle and the memories of the war come rushing back, they must come to terms with the way society has treated them and the way they treat each other... while avoiding a pack of Vietnamese thugs who also want the treasure.

The 100 Words: Like many Netflix films this 2 1/2 hour picture is too bloated and could have used a rewrite or two on the script, especially in the final 45 minutes. Despite that, it is a wonderful story of sacrifice and pain that is remarkably timely in our current struggle with racism. The cast is universally excellent, especially Lindo who will probably get some award buzz later this year. Spike Lee knows how to push buttons and teach us a lesson while also entertaining. This may not be quite as strong as last year's BlacKkKlansman, but it is still well worth watching.
