JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Old Guard

Thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of Charlize Theron, this is one of Netflix best action films

Film critic Jason Evans wants to give you all you need to know about movies without bogging you down in long prose. So, he is writing all his film reviews in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100-word-review of Netflix's new film, The Old Guard.

The Premise: Based on a comic book series, The Old Guard is the story of four mercenaries who fight on behalf of those who cannot fight for themselves. But Andy (Charlize Theron), Booker, Joe, and Nicky are more than mercenaries with a heart, they are immortals. They don't age and their wounds magically heal in seconds. The Guard is shocked when they discover a new immortal, Nile (KiKi Layne from " If Beale Street Could Talk"), just as a secretive corporation begins hunting them down, hoping to bring the secret of immortality to anyone who can afford it.

The 100 Words: 2 hours of Charlize Theron kicking butt! Theron is great at creating bad-ass characters who are also emotional.  The action scenes are top-notch and the cast keeps us engaged, even if the plot is mostly formulaic. The script is over-loaded with angst and spends a lot of time setting up plot-lines that probably would have been better served in a sequel. This film did not need to be 2+ hours long. It is clear that Netflix wants to turn this into a franchise, but so long as they bring Theron back, I'd be in for more of The Old Guard.
