JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Synchronic

A fun sci-fi trip anchored by two honest performances

Film critic Jason Evans is here to bring you what you need to know about movies in bite-sized chunks that are quick to read. Here is his 100-word-review of Synchronic.

The Premise: The most mainstream film yet from writing/directing team Justin Benson and Aaron Morehead, and their least “horror” film to date. Synchronic is the story of lifetime friends Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) who are paramedics in New Orleans. They get called in to clean up when someone dies in an unexpected way. They soon start to discover more and more strange deaths connected to a designer drug called Synchronic that not only gets you high, it takes you someplace very unexpected.

The 100 Words: The “drug that has strange sci-fi side effects” story has been done many times before, but it is the relationship between the main characters that sets this film apart from the rest. Mackie and Dornin inject realism and humanity into the story and Benson/Morehead have a fabulous feel for mood and ambience. Oh, and the cinematography if gorgeous. It has a horror feel at times, but never really goes there, sticking more to gritty sci-fi. The less you know about the plot, the better. A good but not great flick that leaves me eager to see where Benson/Morehead go next.
