JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Dear Santa

Cute and inspiring but missing a story

Film Critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100 word review of Dear Santa.

The Premise: From acclaimed documentary director Dana Nachman (Pick of the Litter) comes the story of what the post office does with all those “Dear Santa” letters every year. The ones that Santa and his elves cannot answer get put aside so regular folks can “adopt” the letter and fulfill someone’s Christmas wish. This film shows us several letter writers and gift givers.

The 100 Words: Though undeniably uplifting and inspiring at times, “Dear Santa” suffers from a poor narrative structure. Nachman veers through a dozen or so characters and we never get to know any of them well enough to really connect. Plus, there just isn’t that much drama or challenge here. The film is not going to show us someone who’s Christmas wish goes unfulfilled. It isn’t a bad film, and if you are craving a “good deeds for the holidays” story, then this flick will hit the spot, but I feel like there had to be something more compelling somewhere in these stories.
