JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Our Friend

A touching look at how to get through the tough times

Don’t have time for long movie reviews? Film Critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about films in exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100 word review of Our Friend.

The Premise: Based on a true story, blissfully married couple Matthew and Nicole Teague (Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson) seem to be leading a pretty good life when they are suddenly rocked to find out Nicole has cancer. Their best friend Dane Faucheaux (Jason Segel) senses that they need help so he moves in to “be there” for the two most important people in his life. As Nicole’s condition gets worse, Dane and Matthew try to juggle taking care of her while protecting the family’s children from the reality of their family tragedy.

The 100 Words: It seems like tear-jerker films are Casey Affleck’s specialty, but it is both Johnson and Segel who really shine with deeply real and emotional performances. The story is told out of chronological order, a questionable decision which makes things confusing at times. I feel like our screens have been filled with troubles and sadness lately, and this film is anything but a feel good flick, even if Segal has some great moments of humor. Still, with a healthy message about the power of friendship, you could do a lot worse. Just make sure you have a box of Kleenex handy.
