JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Silk Road

The true story is better than the movie version

Don’t have time for long movie reviews? Film Critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about films in exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100 word review of Silk Road.

The Premise: Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) may not have a steady job or much direction in life, but he is a true libertarian who hates the way the government controls us. So, Ross comes up with the idea to create an online marketplace, called Silk Road, where people can anonymously buy and sell whatever they want, including drugs. While government cybercrimes investigators struggle to catch Ross, old school agent Rick Bowden (Jason Clark) figures out that developing a personal connection with the criminal may be the key to cracking all this.

The 100 Words: The true story of the Silk Road marketplace is an amazing tale, but this film drags and contains several confusing turns. It spends too much time bogged down in the life of DEA agent Bowden, who needed to be nuanced but comes off as just a jerk. I really wanted to better understand Ulbricht and his motivations, but the film never really went there. The screenplay was a mess and I got frustrated while watching. There are many documentaries and articles that will do a better job of educating you about this gripping story, watch them and skip this flick.
