JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard

It tries too hard and really falls flat

The Premise: After the chaos of the last film, Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) is ready to give up on professional bodyguarding. He’s pretty sure he will never get his AAA rating back. Bryce takes a quiet beach vacation to reset his mind and body but can barely sit down when Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek) shows up with a bunch of killers trailing her. She explains that her husband, Darius (Samuel L Jackson), has been kidnapped by gangsters and Dairus says she needs Bryce to help with the rescue. The trio soon finds themselves trying to stop a Greek billionaire (Antonio Banderas) who wants to destroy Europe’s entire electrical grid.

The 100 Words: This mess of jumbled storytelling is little more than an excuse to take our trio from one crazed situation to the next, giving them an excuse to swear at each other while shooting a bunch of bad guys. No one acts realistically so it is hard to care about what is happening on screen. Character and story development are an afterthought. Reynolds, Jackson, and Hayak are charming actors but it seems like they were told to turn every scene up to 11 in terms of intensity and I found the constant shrieking tiresome. The original was ok, this one isn’t.
