JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Old

Not Night’s best, but far from his worst

You don’t have time to waste on long-winded movie reviews. You want to cut to the chase and find out what is good and what is bad, right? Well, Jason Evans is here to give you all you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100-word review of M. Night Shyamalan’s Old.

The Premise: A married couple, Guy (Gael García Bernal) and Prisca (Vicky Krieps), are on vacation at a beach resort with their young son and daughter. The resort manager tells them about an exclusive private cove they can visit. A few other families also join them at the cove. After a short time, an elderly woman dies and they realize all the people on the beach are aging much faster than they should. The children and adults are soon racing against time to get off the beach before they all die and turn to dust.

The 100 Words: More mystery/thriller than a horror movie, Old is wildly inconsistent with tonal shifts that are hard to take (I was often laughing when I should have been horrified). But, despite a bonkers plot that defies logic, I could not tear my eyes away from the screen and the 108 minute run time flew by. Night is more interested in his premise (and occasionally grossing us out) than he is in the characters, which is a problem because I just did not care whether any of them survived. Still, it was a fun ride and Night has certainly done worse.
