JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Suicide Squad

Gunn hits a homerun with this action-comedy

Film Critic Jason Evans makes it his business to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to sing Happy Birthday. His reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101) and here is his 100 word review of The Suicide Squad.

The Premise – From the marvelous mind of writer/director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), The Suicide Squad finds a group of superpowered prison inmates being sent to the South American island nation of Corto Maltese. A research facility on the island has been harboring a secret that could threaten all of mankind and Task Force X (aka: The Suicide Squad) needs to go in and neutralize it. Among the members of Task Force X are Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), and Col. Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman). And, pulling all the strings behind the scenes is the woman who created Task Force X, manipulative Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).

The 100 Words – Gunn is a mad scientist who has combined a gritty war film with an uproarious comedy and it works perfectly. The Suicide Squad starts out with a bang and never lets up. The script has great pace, with several unexpected turns. Each member of the main cast is given a couple nice moments, though Robbie’s Quinn is easily the most compelling character. It’s not perfect, the script sometimes goes a little too over-the-top, but this is one of the best films of the year and a great way to put the complexities of real life aside for a couple hours.
