Marvel tells a small story on the small screen
Note – I was given access to the first two (of 6) episodes
of Hawkeye. This review may not apply to the entire Hawkeye series.
The Premise – Clint “Hawkeye” Barton (Jeremy Renner) is
really hoping to enjoy a quiet Christmas with his family after helping to save
the universe by defeating Thanos. Meanwhile, college archery champion Kate
Bishop (Haillee Steinfeld), who has idolized Hawkeye since the Battle of New
York, accidentally finds herself fighting off criminals when she starts looking
into strange goings on surrounding her mother’s new fiancé. Through a series of
misunderstandings, a band of Russian bad guys mistake Kate for Clint’s old alter-ego,
Ronin. Not willing to let this young girl fall victim to the vengeful gang, Barton
agrees to help her out.
The 100 Words – Considering it has only 6 episodes, there just isn’t all that much that happens in the first two. Though it is called Hawkeye, the series is mostly about Kate Bishop and I am, thus far, not really connecting to her story very much. What’s more, the series feels very low stakes. The bad guys are comical and there is no sense of some larger plan afoot. A third of the way into the story, none of the unanswered questions are very compelling. It will need a lot of story development to be must-see TV the way Loki and Wandavision were.
Extra note – Perhaps the best part of the first two episodes was an hysterical Broadway musical called “Rogers” based on the life of Captain America, Steve Rogers. If you are a Marvel fan, these scenes alone almost make the entire series worth watching... almost.
