Captivating, but ultimately a mess
The Premise – When middle-class Patrizia (Lady Gaga) meets
the nerdy heir to the Gucci empire, Maurizio (Adam Driver), it is love at first
sight (of his wallet). With her gentle prodding, he becomes more and more
engaged in the family business run by his father (Jeremy Irons) and uncle (Al Pacino),
eventually becoming favored over his dim-witted cousin, Paolo (Jared Leto). As
Maurizio becomes more and more power-hungry, can his relationship with Patrizia
survive? The film also stars Salma Hayek and is directed by the legendary Ridley Scott.
The 100 Words – Despite a lush production and stellar cast, this film is an exercise in excess. It needed to be shorter and have a better sense of the story it wants to tell. Jared Leto steals every scene he is in but it is like he’s in a comedy while everyone else is in a drama. The way the camera lingers on Gaga’s ample bosom is creepy as she is shoved into tight clothes. Driver’s Maurizio shifts from shy to cutthroat at the drop of a hat. It feels like Ridley Scott needed someone to remind him that sometimes less is more.
