JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: King Richard

A compelling look at a complicated man

Film Critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to serve and volley a game-winning point. Jason’s reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). This is his 100 word review of King Richard

The Premise – Richard Williams (Will Smith) has a dream. He believes that his two daughters Venus and Serena are going to be tennis superstars. But, other than his wife, no one else seems to think it will happen. He spends all his free time teaching the game to the girls (on whatever decrepit court he can find in poor Compton, California) while desperately trying to find a professional coach who can take them to the next level. Richard is determined to do it his way and no number of naysayers can convince him he is wrong.

The 100 Words – This typical uplifting sports story is elevated to the next level by Will Smith’s strong performance and an excellent supporting cast. The story is frustrating at times because Richard makes decisions that seem counterproductive, and his rationale is never explained. The film has some pacing issues too and ends somewhat abruptly before we get to see Venus and Serena reach the pinnacle of their sport. Still, Smith’s work here certainly puts him in the Best Actor conversation and there is something fun about knowing that unprecedented success awaits these characters if they can just get through the next few scenes.
