JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Tick, Tick... Boom!

Touching and toe-tapping entertainment

Film Critic Jason Evans is on a mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to hum a catchy tune. Jason’s reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). This is his 100 word review of Tick, Tick..Boom!

The Premise – This is both a filmed adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical as well as a look at Larson’s struggle to become a successful composer. Larson would, of course, go on to create “Rent” but this is a film about a young man desperate for his music to get noticed, not someone on the verge of creating a mega-hit. Andrew Garfield stars as Larson and this is the first film directed by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The 100 Words – Garfield is both frenetic and magnetic here and will deservedly get awards consideration. The supporting cast includes numerous recognizable faces and wondrous singing voices. Miranda’s direction is stylish, clever, and really draws us in. That said, there are a couple songs that fall a bit flat and really serve to put the brakes on any momentum the film was generating. Musical theater fans will probably adore this picture, but I suspect it will struggle to find other audiences. Being on Netflix may also be problematic as this is one of those films that will work best in a darkened theater.
