JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Deep Water

 Not sexy and ultimately stupid

Film Critic Jason Evans is on a mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to steal a kiss while no one is watching. His reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). This is his 100 word review of Deep Water.

The Premise – Acclaimed director Adrian Lyne (9 ½ Weeks, Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal) is known for sexy thrillers and this is his first film in 20 years. This time, his seductress is Melinda Van Allen (Ana de Armas from Knives Out and No Time To Die), the wife of wealthy, semi-retired Vic Van Allen (Ben Affleck). Melinda is bored with her marriage and is intent on finding new lovers. It seems like Vic doesn’t care about his wife’s infidelities, but Melinda’s lovers keep turning up dead. Is Vic killing them and if he is, can he get away with it?

The 100 Words – For a “sexy thriller” this film is neither seductive nor mysterious. It is never clear what is going on in the Van Allen’s messed-up relationship so we mostly just stare the screen trying to figure out why these people act this way. I think Affleck is supposed to be playing a cold character, but it makes him unsympathetic and there’s no way we are supposed to root for the philandering Melinda. So, we are left with no one to care about. Lyne can do much better than this. No wonder Disney decided to put this on Hulu, not in theaters.
