JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Morbius

Superhero movies hit a new low

Film Critic Jason Evans is on a mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to peek to see if something is lurking in the dark. His reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). This is his 100 word review of Morbius.

The Premise – Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) is a scientist who’s invention of synthetic blood has changed the world of medicine. Michael is obsessed with blood because he has a rare blood disease which makes him weak and likely to die soon. His best friend, Lucien** (Matt Smith) also suffers from the blood disorder and uses his tremendous wealth to fund Michael’s research. Michael thinks he has found a cure by merging his blood with that of some vampire bats, but the cure turns out to be a curse because Michael suddenly finds that he has superpowers… but also an insatiable thirst for warm human blood.

The 100 Words – Lazy, predictable, with little character development or thoughtful storytelling, Morbius is one of the worst comic book movies made in recent years. It seems to only exist so it can set up future movies, including a pair of post-credit scenes that are shameful in their pandering to the audience. The pity is that there are some interesting issues and ideas that could be explored in this character, but Sony is only interested in making a commercial for a future Sinister Six film. If they want us to come see the sequel, try making the original good in the first place.

**- Michael and everyone else calls Lucien “Milo” for some reason that is never fully explained.
