An action-packed spy thriller
Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than an assassin’s bullet. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 doesn’t tell you enough but 101 is going overboard). Here is his 100-word review of The Gray Man.
The Premise: Ryan Gosling plays a
covert CIA assassin code named Sierra Six. He is a legend for his lethality and we see him
use fireworks, flashlights, and even water as weapons in this film. Six has
always worked for Donald Fitrzoy (Billy Bob Thornton) but is called upon by hotshot
CIA rising star Denny Carmichael (Rege-Jean Page from Bridgerton) for a special
mission. Fellow agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) is brought in to help Six
out. But, Six discovers the mission is not what they expected and he suspects
Carmichael may be bad. Carmichael hires psychopathic mercenary Lloyd
Hansen (Chris Evans) and tells him to do whatever it takes to hunt down Six and
Dani. The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: Civil
War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame) with a script by longtime Russo
collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The 100 Words: You can see every penny of the $200 million
budget on screen here with set pieces so over the top, they force the story to
take a bit of a back seat. But, this thrill ride isn’t pretending to be smart or
clever. It feels like a cousin to the Jason Bourne films with more intense fights
and less plot development. Gosling and Evans clearly have fun throwing witty barbs
and fierce punches at each other and De Armas proves her butt-kicking cameo in the
latest James Bond film was no fluke. Turn off your brain and enjoy the ride!
NOTE: For some reason Netflix has chosen to only give this film
a short, limited theatrical release before heading to streaming. I recommend trying
to see it on a big screen if you can to really immerse yourself in the crazy
action sequences.
