JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Nope

 Jordan Peele delivers again

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to glance up at the sky. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is minimalist but 101 would be excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Nope.

The Premise: Writer/director Jordan Peele (Get Out and Us) brings us another truly original, scary, mystery, thriller. OJ Heywood (Daniel Kaluuya -- Get Out, Black Panther, Judas and the Black Messiah) and his sister Em (Keke Palmer – Hustlers, MTV’s Scream) run a horse farm outside of Los Angeles. When they notice strange objects moving in the clouds, they decide to get some video cameras so they can record the unexplained visitors. But, the objects in the sky turn out to be far more dangerous than the Heywoods think. The film also stars Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Minari) as a former child actor who now runs a nearby cowboy-themed amusement park.

The 100 words: Though it starts a little slow, the middle hour of Nope had my heart pounding non-stop. Mercifully, there are several moments of side-splitting humor to break the tension. Peele sets up an amazing story that works on multiple levels (including a commentary on how we discard things we don’t want to look at anymore). The cinematography and sound design are award-quality, completely drawing you into this world. Kaluuya is great and Palmer’s energy is infectious. It isn’t as good as Get Out, the ending is more than a little strained, but the journey we take here is well worth it.
