JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Don't Worry Darling

 Predictably messy

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to daydream about the simple life. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too few and 101 would be too much). Here is his 100-word review of Don’t Worry Darling.

The Premise: In a scene straight out of 1950s America, Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are wildly-in-love couple leading an idyllic life in the planned community of Victory. All the men in town work for the mysterious “Victory Project” while the women stay at home to raise kids and scrub the house clean. But, something just seems a little bit off. One of Alice’s friends is acting strangely and the Victory Project leader (Chris Pine) is a cult-like figure who is more than a bit of a control freak. Can Alice figure out what is happening before the world crumbles around her? The film is directed by Olivia Wilde (Booksmart) who also appears as Alice’s next door neighbor.

The 100 Words: Pugh does her best but even her enormous talents cannot elevate what is a silly and largely predictable story. There’s nothing worse than sci-fi that thinks it is really clever and smart but turns out to be obvious and dumb. Wilde may be showing her directorial inexperience here with a film that takes far too long to really get moving and in which many scenes drag on unnecessarily. Styles does fine in his on-screen debut, but he’s not ready to make movies better… just be thankful he doesn’t really ruin things. You can wait for cable to watch this one.
