JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Creator

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to fall in love with an innocent child. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 would be too short, but 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of The Creator.

The Premise – It is the year 2060 and mankind is using AI robots to do all kinds of tasks. But when a nuclear bomb goes off in Los Angeles, the western world blames it on AI and launches a war against the machines. The AI are forced to move to “New Asia” where they live peacefully alongside people. A U.S. soldier named Joshua (John David Washington from Tenet and BlacKkKlansman) is tasked with infiltrating the AI community and finding their leader. When his mission goes haywire, his wife is killed and Joshua quits the fight. But five years later, he is drawn back in with word that his wife may still be alive. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Star Wars: Rogue One) and he is also credited as co-screenwriter. It also stars Allison Janey (The West Wing, Mom), Gemma Chan (Eternals, Crazy Rich Asians), and the legendary Ken Watanabe (Godzilla, The Last Samurai).

The 100 Words – Edwards has a ton of thought-provoking ideas about AI, but throws so many of them at the screen that we don’t get a satisfying exploration of any of it. I feel like he was trying to make a futuristic version of Apocalypse Now, but failed to land this convoluted story. The film is gorgeous to look at and certainly drew me in at first, but ultimately left me feeling really unsatisfied as it spun off into awkward, and often obvious, directions. I love thoughtful, original sci-fi, but this one needed a little more debugging before being unleashed on mankind.
