JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Fall Guy

 Ryan’s charm saves the day

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to fall into a safety net. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, but 101 is like reading War and Peace). Here is his 100-word review of The Fall Guy.

The Premise: Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is one of the best stunt men in the business and the longtime body double for action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). He’s also madly in love with camera operator Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt). But when an injury almost takes Colt’s life, he quits the business and refuses to speak to Jody. Fast forward 18 months and Colt is suddenly dragged back into the stunt game when Tom goes missing, putting Jody’s first film as a director in dire jeopardy. The Fall Guy is directed by stunt man turned director David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train). It also stars Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) as a film producer and Winston Duke (Black Panther) as Colt’s stuntman buddy.

The 100-words: Whatever they paid Ryan Gosling, it wasn’t enough as his charisma saves what could have been a mediocre film. The script is predictable and aggressively dumb at times and there were far fewer laughs than I expected. But all of that barely matters as one of our most charming movie stars takes us on a thrill ride. He has nice chemistry with Blunt and the movie does an amazing job of highlighting some sensational stunts. There’s also a French-speaking attack dog who nearly steals the show. This movie is a strong argument there needs to be a Best Stunts Oscar!
