JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: IF

Humorless and hollow

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to hug an imaginary friend. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, but 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of IF.

The Premise: 12-year-old Bea (Cailey Flemming from The Walking Dead) is at a tough moment in life. She lost her mother to cancer and now her father (played by director/screenwriter John Krasinski) is facing his own medical problems. Bea is staying with her grandmother in New York City and feeling lonely until one night she sees a cartoonish character who turns out to be another child’s imaginary friend (IF). Soon Bea finds herself working alongside Cal (Ryan Reynolds), the only other person who can see the Ifs, in an effort to get IFs reconnected with their now-adult childhood friends. The film features an all-star cast of voices including Steve Carrell, Bradley Cooper, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The 100 words:

The excruciating 18 hours after I saw IF:

  • Screening over -- That looked ok but the script had problems. It’s like a 6 out of 10.
  • Bedtime -- I just realized 18 more problems with the story. I'm souring on this thing.
  • Breakfast -- Who was this movie even for? I can't figure out an audience.
  • Mid-morning -- They marketed this as a comedy?!?! I didn't laugh... not once.
  • Lunch -- I haven't seen Ryan Reynolds look like he was just cashing a check like this since R.I.P.D.
  • Mid-afternoon -- This is one of the laziest movies of the year.
