JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Kinds of Kindness

What was that?!?!

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to do a celebratory dance. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short and 101 is excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Kinds of Kindness.

The Premise: From the mind of Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Poor Things, The Favorite) comes a series of three very strange and dark stories that are mildly connected to each other. The actors in this project play different roles in each story and the cast is led by superstars Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, and Lanthimos staple Emma Stone. Story #1 is the tale of a corporate middleman (Plemons) who’s entire life is controlled by his boss (Dafoe). Story #2 explores a man (Plemons) who’s wife (Stone) goes missing, but when she shows up again he thinks she is an imposter. And story #3 is about a woman in a cult of water worshipers (Stone) who is tasked by the cult leader (Dafoe) to search for a messiah-like figure.

The 100-words: A deeply divisive film. I am hesitant to recommend it to anyone because it is confusing and dark… but I would love to talk about it with anyone who sees it. Each story presents multiple mysteries, but Lanthimos doesn’t give us answers. He just wants us to experience how others deal with these mysteries. That is frustrating for the audience… but it can also be beautiful and revealing and it certainly makes you think. As with every Lanthimos film, the craft on display is award-caliber. Be prepared for a confusing, pervasively weird experience if you challenge yourself with this flick.
