JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Longlegs

 Chilling but needed more

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to jump out of your seat in fear. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short and 101 is excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Longlegs.

The Premise: Young FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe of It Follows) finds herself investigating a strange serial killer who has struck seemingly random families for decades. The only clue he leaves behind are coded notes signed with the name Longlegs (Nicholas Cage). To the surprise of Harker’s FBI boss (Blair Underwood), she seems to find clues and answers where other agents have come up with nothing. Though Harker does not understand why, she seems to have some kind of connection to Longlegs. Can she stop him before he completes another deadly mission? The film is directed by Osgood Perkins, the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins.

The 100-words: The film oozes foreboding doom from the opening frame to the very end; relentlessly creepy and unsettling. But, I was rarely truly scared and found it more tedious than compelling. The script has real issues, including a ridiculous ending that left me frustrated. Cage goes so over the top in his portrayal, he almost comes off more clownish than scary. Monroe’s Harker is so strange, I could not connect with her and that kept me from really being immersed in the story. If you want to feel anxiety and apprehension for 2 hours, this is fine. Otherwise, I say pass.
