JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: F1 The Movie

A visual wonder in search of a better story

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you about movies in less time than it takes to go 0-200 in a racecar. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is never enough and 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of F1: The Movie.

The Premise: Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was once one of the top racers in Formula One. But a terrible crash derailed his career and now he is a forgotten has-been, racing on smaller circuits and hoping to make ends meet. When his old racing friend Ruben (Javier Bardem) approaches him with a shot at F1 again, Sonny thinks it is a joke. Ruben explains that he has a great, young driver on his team, Joshua (Damson Idris), but needs someone experienced to bring it all together. Can Sonny help the worst team in F1 find success before Ruben’s investors will take the team away from him? The film also stars Kerry Condon as a genius car designer and is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Top Gun: Maverick.

The 100-words: A remarkable feat of filmmaking with camera work and visual effects that put you on the track and pin you to your seat. Pitt is gorgeous and electric, you cannot take your eyes off him. But the story is largely predictable and the characters are somewhat uninteresting. The racing actually gets a bit repetitive once you get past the wonder of being inside the racecar. It felt more like an experience than a fully-realized film. Make no mistake though, this is a visual and auditory treat and is well-worth seeing on a giant screen, but don’t expect anything too thought-provoking.
