JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Send Help

 Not perfect, but still fun

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to fillet a piece of fish. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short while 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Send Help.

The Premise: Corporate strategist Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) is a whiz with numbers but lousy at personal relationships. Her co-workers mostly sneer at her and her only friend in life is her pet parrot. She spends most of her evenings watching her favorite TV show, Survivor. When Linda tries to convince her company’s hotshot new CEO, Bradley (Dylan O’Brien from the Maze Runner films) that she deserves a promotion, he reluctantly takes her along on a business trip overseas. But, their plane crashes, leaving Linda and Bradley stranded on a deserted island. Linda soon finds that being a real-life Survivor may be just what she has looked for her entire life. When Bradley says he just wants to get home, will Linda even let him leave? The film is directed by Sam Raimi (the original Spider-Man trilogy, Evil Dead, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness).

The 100-words: This film has a couple problems -- the middle third drags a bit and doesn’t really go anywhere and the whole thing has a bit of a “who am I rooting for?” issue – but it is mostly a lot of fun and has several wonderful scenes that do a great job of engaging the audience. Raimi is a master and constantly keeps us off balance with moments of humor and horror (almost). McAdams really shines and her growth from inept socially to expert survivor is a real highlight. This flick is more engaging than I expected for a late-January release.
