JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Drama

 Utterly cringe, but utterly fascinating

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to say “I do… I think.” His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short while 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of The Drama.

The Premise: Charlie and Emma (Robert Pattinson and Zendaya) are a young couple just days away from getting married. A series of flashbacks shows us their meet cute and loving relationship. One night, while having drinks with their best friends Mike and Rachel (Mamadou Athie and Alana Haim), the mildly drunk group decides to play a game where they each tell their deepest secret. After a few somewhat disturbing stories from the rest of the group, Emma reluctantly reveals something so shocking that it causes Rachel to fly into a rage. Charlie is shaken and begins to doubt his entire relationship. Emma insists the story is from her past and not who she is today, but Charlie is left wondering if he really knows the woman he is about to marry.

The 100-words: A tough movie to recommend because it is full of difficult-to-watch moments and characters doing things that make you want to yell at the screen in frustration. But it is also a film that demands your attention and is certain to inspire passionate conversation. The performances are all very strong (Haim’s Rachel is positively evil) and director Kristoffer Borgli has a real visual style. It almost plays like a comedy, with the audience laughing as a way of relieving the tension on screen. If nothing else, you can test your own relationship by putting it up against this cringe-inducing tale.
