Cute but unoriginal
Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to tell a lie and instantly regret it. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, while 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of You, Me and Tuscany.
The Premise: Anna’s (Halle Bailey from The Little Mermaid)
life is a mess. She once wanted to be a chef, but gave it up to care for her
cancer-stricken mother. Now, her mother is gone and Anna cannot figure out what
to do next. One night she meets a kind Italian man named Mateo and they each
pour out their life stories to each other. He tells her that he is estranged
from his family but has a house in Tuscany that is unoccupied. Hearing him talk
about his gorgeous hometown makes Anna long to visit Italy so she travels
there. When a series of mishaps leave her without anywhere to stay, she sneaks
into Mateo’s home. The next morning she is discovered by his family and they mistakenly
think she is Mateo’s fiancé. Anna wants to tell them the truth, but they are
all so happy because they think she is going to bring Mateo back. The whole
thing becomes even more complicated when Anna finds herself falling for Mateo’s
cousin, Michael (Regé-Jean Page from Bridgerton).
The 100-words: The charming leads and stunning natural
beauty of Tuscany make this is an easy film to watch. The picture also does a
good job of mining its secondary characters for amusing bits of humor. But, it doesn’t
have much else going for it. I was disappointed they didn’t do more with the
food in the film, as that could have helped elevate what is a pedestrian
script. It is full of obvious rom-com tropes and you can see virtually every
beat of the story coming well in advance. The final product is not-bad, but probably
could have been much better.
