JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Obsession

 Creepy and clever

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to make a wish. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, while 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Obsession.

The Premise: Former YouTube creator Curry Barker makes the transition to Hollywood films with this twist on the classic Monkey's Paw/“be careful what you wish for” genre of storytelling. “Bear” Bailey (Michael Johnston of MTV’s TeenWolf) has been in love with his childhood friend and current co-worker Nikki (Inde Navarrette from Superman & Lois) for years. But Bear just cannot get up the courage to tell Nikki about his feelings. One night, he purchases a One Wish Willow, a toy that supposedly grants whatever you ask for, and wishes that Nikki would love him more than anyone else on Earth. Instantly, Nikki is transformed. But her love is so powerful, it leads to increasingly bizarre behavior as Nikki displays jealousy, neediness, and obsession that goes beyond a normal relationship. To make things even worse, Bear begins to notice brief moments where the real Nikki is fighting to get out from inside the fake emotions that are now dominating her.

The 100-words: Cringy, creepy, and clever, this horror film almost plays more like a dark comedy as the audience squirms in their seats at the increasingly uncomfortable relationship on display. Not everything works in the script – the story never really evolves beyond the basic premise – but it more than holds your attention and Barker has real eye for eerie moments. He does more with less, effectively using shadows and darkness to unnerve us. Navarrette is a real find here, with a daring performance that both scares and draws sympathy. A fun date movie… if your relationship is in a good place.
