JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Supergirl

 A Dull CGI Mess

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than a speeding bullet. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, while 101 would be wordy). Here is his 100-word review of Supergirl.

The Premise: Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock from House of the Dragon) is a superhero without a home. She came to Earth many years after her cousin, Superman did, and doesn’t feel much of a connection to that planet. She grew up on a part of Krypton that survived the initial destruction of their planet, but eventually died out. So, she is just wandering around planets that have red suns (Earth is yellow) which means she won’t have her powers, but also means she can get drunk and at least feel SOMETHING. But when Kara’s dog Kypto is poisoned by outlaws known as the Brigands, Kara needs to get her powers back to save him. And she is carrying extra baggage, a young girl named Ruthye who’s family was murdered by the Brigands. The film also stars Jason Momoa as Lobo, an interstellar bounty hunter and renegade. It is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya and Cruella).

The 100-words: With little of the charm or humor of James Gunn’s Superman, this film is a slog. The planet-hopping and green screens give it little sense of place and Kara’s youthful angst gets tiresome. All the action is CGI that feels like we have seen a million times before. The Brigands are uninteresting and generic bad guys. Lobo is useless and probably should have been cut completely cut out. I like Alcock and think her character can be useful in the DCU, but this film needed a more thoughtful plot and steadier direction. Gunn needs to course correct after this mess.
