JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Invite

 A very Wilde night!

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to chug a glass of wine. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, while 101 would be wordy). Here is his 100-word review of The Invite.

The Premise: Joe (Seth Rogan) and his wife Angela (Olivia Wilde) are stuck in what has become a loveless marriage. He’s a failed musician and she can’t seem to find any purpose in life. Joe is especially bothered by their upstairs neighbors, Hawk (Ed Norton) and Pina (Penelope Cruz), who engage in loud sex every night that often wakes him up. But when the two couples get together for a dinner party the mood shifts dramatically as Hawk and Pina reveal that they believe in group sex… and they have a proposition for Joe and Angela. The film was directed by Wilde.

The 100-words: The frenetic script and brilliant acting had me howling with laughter. For the first 2/3rds, this was easily among the funniest films of the year. It takes a darker, more serious turn at that point but that is because it is being faithful to its characters and where their stories needs to go. Wilde’s direction is creative and the camera is constantly working to get you close to the action. Couples will find plenty that they can relate to in the relationships on screen – perhaps uncomfortably so. A great date movie… come for the humor, but stay for the honesty.
