Funny yet forgettable
Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to speak gibberish. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, while 101 would be wordy). Here is his 100-word review of Minions & Monsters.
The Premise: The
film tells the story of how the Minions saved Hollywood back in the early days
of film. After a series of mishaps involving the Minions and various “evil”
masters, this tribe of little yellow dudes finds themselves in Hollywood, where
their gibberish language is ideal for the silent movie era. As talkies begin to
become popular, some of the Minions decide they want to move behind the camera
and become filmmakers. But their idea for a movie soon spins out of control as
the monsters they conjure have sinister plans of their own. The film features
numerous famous actors in voice roles including Allison Janney, Christoph Walz,
Trey Parker, and Jeff Bridges.
The 100-words: You know what you are going to get from this long-successful franchise. Lots of silliness and cartoon violence that is perfectly suited for kids under 10. This film actually does a nice job of sprinkling in some jokes for adults – especially in the first 30 minutes or so – as it mines Hollywood history for clever sight gags. Sadly, the story begins to peter out toward the middle and adults may have trouble keeping their focus. Though just 90 minutes, I was stifling a yawn through the back half. There’s nothing new here, but the Minions formula is still boxoffice gold.
