JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Odyssey

Epic Filmmaking

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to poke the eye of a cyclops. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too short, while 101 would be wordy). Here is his 100-word review of Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey.

The Premise: Really? You don’t know one of the oldest stories ever told? Odysseus (Matt Damon) is the king of Ithaca and a general in the Greek army that spends ten years laying siege to Troy. He gets the idea to hide in a wooden horse to defeat the Trojans. But his journey home after the war is full of peril and hardship. Patiently waiting for him at home are his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). Also waiting are scores of suitors who want to replace him on the throne. The film also stars Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and many other A-list stars. The almost 3 hour long film is written and directed by Oscar-winner Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight, Inception).

The 100-words: Another Nolan masterpiece. The craft and precision on display are a wonder to behold. Though a sensational myth, everything feels tactile and real. I loved the way Nolan wove the various chapters of Odysseus’ journey into a cohesive story. There are numerous wonderful performances and Damon is certain to get his third Best Actor nomination. The film does feel its length a couple times, but the pacing really picks up in the final hour and there are many impressive action sequences that really move. Maybe not quite on the level of Nolan’s best films, but still a remarkable cinematic achievement.
