Predictable but charming
Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than you can fall in love at first sight. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (because 99 would leave you unfulfilled, but 101 would be excessive). Here is his 100-word review of One Night Only.
The Premise: This
light romcom takes place in a U.S. that has been remade by “the mandate.” It is
a law passed three years ago that outlaws pre-marital sex except for one night
of the year. As a result, that one night has become a nation-wide celebration
of debauchery and promiscuity with everyone looking to find a partner to carry
out their fantasies. The film focuses on Owen (Callum Turner of Eternity and
Fantastic Beasts) and Allie (Monica Barbaro from Top Gun: Maverick and A
Complete Unknown). They are strangers who keep on running into each other as
they seek out someone else. Will they ever figure out that the perfect partner
might be right there in front of them? The film is directed by Will Gluck, who
has a long history with romcoms including Easy A, Friends With Benefits, and Anyone
But You. It also features Molly Ringwald and Levar Burton in a pair of jaw-dropping cameos.
The 100-Words: Shallow
and silly, but also cute and amusing One Night Only may not be a masterpiece,
but it is a decent date movie. The script does a nice job of setting up a
series of outlandish situations and then letting our heroes navigate their way
through them. Turner and Barbaro have strong banter and sexy chemistry. The
film lags a bit in the middle and frustratingly refuses to address the politics
and societal implications of the mandate… leaving the audience with a lot of
questions. But, turn your brain off a bit and you will likely enjoy this breezy
romcom.
