JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Rivals of Amziah King

A remarkable sophomore effort from Andrew Patterson

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than you can swat a bee. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (because 99 would leave you unfulfilled, but 101 would be excessive). Here is his 100-word review of The Rivals of Amziah King.

The Premise: Matthew McConaughey plays Amziah King, a gregarious and free-spirited man who raises honeybees by day and spends his nights playing bluegrass with his amiable friends. One day he sees Kateri (acting newcomer Angelina LookingGlass), a young woman that he used to foster, and he offers her a job helping out with the bees. Things are going great as Angelina becomes immersed in Amziah’s tight-knit community and relishes the pearls of wisdom he is constantly spouting. But their world comes crashing down when Amziah’s bees get stolen. Angelina vows she will find out who took the hives and get revenge! The film also stars Kurt Russell and is written and directed by Andrew Patterson, who made the criminally underappreciated film The Vast of Night.

The 100-words: Two movies wrapped in one. The first half is a McConaughey tour-de-force driven by his charisma, some hysterical comedy, and fabulous musical sequences. The back half is a bit more uneven and conventional as the film transitions into something like Oceans 11 meets Huckleberry Finn. The cast is full of great characters and both McConaughey and LookingGlass give awards worthy performances. Patterson has an incredible eye and moves the camera in ways that draw us into every scene. Though it may not be for everyone, this film will probably end up on my top ten movies of the year list.
