A glorious mess
Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to feed your cat some tasty tuna (when you see the movie, you will understand). His reviews are exactly 100 words long (because 99 leave you wanting more, but 101 is unnecessary verbosity). Here is his 100-word review of Digger.
The Premise: Tom
Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a phenomenally wealthy and powerful oil baron who has an unhealthy obsession with his pet cat.
When his company’s drilling in Greenland causes a climate disaster, Digger must
figure out how to spin it so the world does not hate him. The film also stars
Riz Ahmed as Digger’s top scientist, John Goodman as the U.S. President, and
Jesse Plemons as a mysterious investor. It is written and directed by
Alejandro Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant, Bardo).
The 100-words: Iñárritu films tend to be self-indulgent
and heavy-handed. This is no exception. Many filmgoers find this flick too
obvious and too pompous. But, despite the many flaws, I had a delightful time. There
are stretches that feel very Wes Anderson inspired and the outstanding cast is fully
committed to the folly on screen. Cruise transforms himself and delivers one of
his best performances, including a powerful soliloquy that cuts our oil
obsession to the core. This is a brave choice for him. Digger is funny and
propulsive and you will absolutely want to talk about it when it is over.
