Stylish but empty
Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than a machete slices through flesh. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (because 99 would leave you unfulfilled, but 101 would be excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Onslaught.
The Premise:
Celeste (Adria Arjona, Hit Man) is a former Army sniper who now lives in a
trailer park in the middle of nowhere. She is suffering from PTSD and has a
frosty relationship with pretty much everyone in her life, except for her young
daughter. What she does not know is that just a few miles from the trailer park
is an abandoned military base that is being used by the grandson of a Nazi
scientist (Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey) to build a trio of super soldiers
who are killing machines that barely flinch when they get shot. When the super
soldiers escape from the base, it is up to Celeste to save her daughter from
the murderous marauders. The film also stars Reginald VelJohson (Die Hard,
Family Matters) and is directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, Godzilla vs. Kong).
The 100-words: This
film looks waaaay better than it should as Wingard shows off his clever camera
work and sense of style. It moves at a good pace too. Sadly, the story is rudimentary
and doesn’t have much to say beyond being bloody and brutal. Wingard turns the sound
up to 11 much of the time, which overwhelmed me so much I got a bit of a
headache. It was more campy than scary and seemed more interested in setting
things up than paying anything off. Wingard has a great eye and can set a mood,
but he needed a better script.
