JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Verity

A dull disaster

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than it takes to rewrite a few lines of copy. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (because 99 leave you wanting more, but 101 is unnecessary verbosity). Here is his 100-word review of Verity.

The Premise: Based on a book by acclaimed romance author Coleen Hoover, Verity stars Dakota Johnson as Lowen, a struggling writer. Lowen is approached by the company that publishes books by superstar author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway). Verity has suffered an accident and is unable to move or even speak. The publisher wants Lowen to secretly finish the books. Lowen goes to Verity’s house to study her notes and soon finds herself growing connected to Verity’s husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett). But something just seems wrong. Lowen swears she sees Verity moving every now and then. Is Lowen losing her mind or is something sinister happening inside Verity and Jeremy’s home? The film is directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Wet Hot American Summer).

The 100-words: I am not the audience for this dreck, but even taking that into account, this is an awful movie. The first hour or so is dull and emotionless with little to engage the audience. None of the actors have any chemistry and this is far from the erotic thriller the marketing promises. There were some unexpected turns when things picked up in the back half, but the story rapidly becomes outrageous and implausible. Much of the plot is revealed through voice-over narration, which is always bad storytelling. Don’t waste your money on a film that treats its audience as fools.
