JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Brittany Runs a Marathon

Award-winning sportswriter and author Mitch Albom once wrote, “It's such a shame to waste time. We always think we have so much of it.” Film critic Jason Evans does not want to waste your time so he is endeavoring to provide clear, concise commentary on movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100 word review of Brittany Runs a Marathon.

The Premise: Brittany (Jillian Bell) is overweight and unsure where her life is headed. She has an uninspiring job and spends most of her nights as the “fat sidekick” of her sexy roommate Gretchen (Alice Lee). Eventually, Brittany gets sick of looking at herself in the mirror and decides to get in shape. She joins a running club and sets off on a goal to run in the New York Marathon. But getting to the finish line will require a lot more than just training.

The 100 Words: Uplifting and funny with a good cast, Brittany Runs a Marathon seems to have all the elements of a great comedy, but the film lags in the middle and the script never made me care very much about the supporting characters. As for Brittany herself, she is often hard to like. The story felt incredibly real and honest at times, but then would veer in ways that didn’t really make sense. I’m still not clear what message the film was trying to convey. Make no mistake, this is not a bad film, but isn’t an inspiring or memorable one either.
