JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Time is precious and you don’t want to waste it. So film critic Jason Evans helps you out by telling you all you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words. Without any further ado, here is his 100-Word Review of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The Premise: As revealed in trailers and other marketing materials, Emperor Palpatine from the original Star Wars trilogy is still alive. He makes Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) his apprentice and takes over control of the First Order in an effort to again stamp out the Resistance and rule the galaxy. Our heroes, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac), and Finn (John Boyega) must stop them… but first, they must find the magical artifacts that will allow them to get to the hidden planet where Palpatine and his army are hiding.

The 100 Words: JJ Abrams’ film is so slavishly devoted to fan service that it does not bother to tell a cohesive story. Much of the movie is a haphazard quest that barely makes sense. The effects are great and the action sequences pop, but with little emotional connection to the story, why should we care? I was confused and often buried my head in my hands out of frustration. I laughed out loud at the movie’s emotional peak. It all feels like an overreaction to some small criticisms of The Last Jedi. This is the worst Star Wars film since the prequels.
