JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Irresistible

I expected something more biting and aware from Jon Stewart

The Premise:
Written and Directed by comedian/commentator Jon Stewart, Irresistible focuses on political strategist Gary Zimmer (Steve Carrell), who was a power player in the Democratic party until he steered Hillary Clinton's campaign to a shocking loss. When Gary sees a video of rural farmer Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) sticking up for immigrants, he decides his way back into the limelight is to take this former marine and turn him into a political star. But Gary's conservative rival Faith (Rose Byrne) has other plans and a small Wisconsin town soon finds itself at the center of a big money political fight.

The 100 Words: Stewart knows how to skewer America's political system, but it feels like he's unsure of the point he's making in this film. The characters are slapstick stupid in one moment but speak biting political commentary the next. The film is uneven and rarely laugh-out-loud funny. Much of this was already done in Will Farrell's The Campaign (another mediocre comedy). The stellar cast is wasted on characters who don't seem to change or evolve at all. Stewart should have brought some of his Daily Show writers on board to punch up this script and give it all more of a point.
